US team in Brazil for IOAA 2024!

The US team is now in Vassouras, Brazil for the 2024 International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) in Brazil. This year’s team includes:

Introductory Astronomy and Astrophysics Summer Camp: Session 3

Please join us this coming Friday, August 2 at 9 PM ET for the second session of our introductory astronomy and astrophysics summer camp! Instructors will cover problem solving techniques and fundamental physics relevant to the USAAAO competition (this session will be focused on the celestial mechanics and cosmology). This will be an excellent opportunity for those starting out in astronomy/astrophysics and looking to prepare for next year’s competition – please spread the word to your friends and anyone who might be interested! 2024 first round exam results!

We would like to thank all of the students who took part in the first round exam last Saturday. We are also especially grateful to teachers and all of the USAAAO volunteers for their hard work in putting together and proctoring the exam.

Exams and solutions can be found here. The cutoff to qualify for the National Astronomy Competition was 13. Scores for the first round exam are posted on Gradescope, with a representative histogram of scores shown below.

Registration will close on January 31st, 2024 at 11:45 PM EST.

The first round exam will take place on February 10th, and there will be two time slots available to accommodate students in different time zones. The competition will be fully online, and students will be proctored by USAAAO volunteers through video calls.

Announcing the dates for USAAAO 2024!

We are excited to announce the following dates for USAAAO 2024:

Registration: Jan 1 – Jan 31
First Round: Feb 10th (12 pm and 9 pm EST)
NAC: Apr 13th (12 pm and 9 pm EST)
Online US IOAA team training and introductory camp: May 13 – Aug 1 (tentative)
IOAA: Aug 17 – Aug 27 (Brazil)

Students are encouraged to visit our Resources page in order to prepare for the competition. Please note that the NAC is an invitational exam offered to the top scorers on the open First Round exam. Furthermore, note that you must be a US citizen/permanent resident to compete for the US at the IOAA.
